Bullying: Mental Health

Bullying can affect both, physical and mental health. It can lead to physical injuries, emotional instability, mental blockades and even death.

Research suggests that children and youth who are bullied over time are more likely to experience depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem. Further, they are more likely to have suicidal thoughts and drop out of school.

Being bullied frequently by other children is considered to be a traumatic experience.

Thus, it is essential for bullying behavior to be taken more seriously in schools because early intervention in childhood bullying can help prevent its long-term mental health consequences.

In my perspective, children should be more upfront about their problems. To do so, parents and counselors must be more open-minded and transparent. In today's day and age, finding such an environment is almost impossible. Bullies get to know when a victim has spoken to a counselor which causes more havoc and oppression. Victims are too scared to take action and bystanders choose to remain bystanders.

This process of bottling your problems in is what causes victims to go berserk. As parents and teachers, we must be sure to identify such symptoms and speak to the children as required in an approachable manner.

Through this anti-bullying campaign, I want to be able to spread awareness about the effects of such problems - mental, physical and cyber bullying.

Keep in touch to read more about such issues. In my next blog, I will be covering the topic of cyber-bullying. Thank you!
